On Sunday, March, 11th, I sent a BIG check to a bike tour company for the privilege of riding my bike across the USA from "sea to shining sea", from Los Angles to Boston.
I know some of you think that I am crazy, and maybe I am. Every day will bring a new challenge, a new level of endurance and an awakening to the vast diversity of America. I hope this adventure will be unparalleled, monumental, challenging and satisfying.
So, how does someone wake up and decide they want to ride their bike on a 3400-mile expedition from Los Angeles to Boston in 48 days? Well, I don’t think that anyone does that, rather, it is a bucket list type of thing. I have been an avid cyclist for many years, and have always been looking for bigger challenges, and this one is immense.
When I am riding my bike, it gives me a lot of time to reflect, think about life, and the world around me. It is my escape.
One of the things I think about often is my late father, Neil Green. He left this world way too early, passing away in July 2016 after a bout with cancer. He was a great man, father, husband, brother, and son. My father was a pediatric orthopedist at Vanderbilt for over 40 years. As a pioneer in his field, and was always challenging those around him to be the best that they can be. He left an indelible mark on so many patients, families, residents, physicians, nurses, and staff.
The Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital was such an important place to him. That’s why when I embarked on this journey, I knew that I wanted to give back to the Children’s Hospital in honor of his legacy.
As a non-profit institution, the Children's Hospital provides care to the children who come through its' doors regardless of the family's ability to pay. Caring support from the community allows this level of service to continue.
I hope that you will follow along with me on this journey, and if you can please make a donation to the Children's Hospital below. 100% of your funds go to the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
