Day 5 | 1st state line crossing | 116 miles Wickenburg, AZ

The first state line crossing today into Arizona. It was a long hot day 116 miles. Today’s blog is going to be rather short because I am beat, spent, tired, I don’t even know.

Day 4 | 98 miles to Blythe, CA | Welcome to the Jungle

Man, this is round two of trying to do my blog. I had it completed and try to post it and then it all went away so this might be a little shorter, I apologize for that. Here is a picture of me this morning before we left the hotel all dressed up and ready to hit the jungle. Do I look like a desert ninja?

Yup the jungle waters I 10 and it really wasn’t that bad. I thought for sure this was going to be the worst day of the tour and it really ended up being OK. The shoulders were wide and the traffic was relatively light and the trucks were very nice and moved over. Some of the roads were not as nice as this one right here a lot of cracks and the wind was heavy in the late afternoon as were the tough terrible roads in the late afternoon. It really wore me out today with the rough roads, the heat, and the wind. But I’m feeling great.

Here is a map of where we went today.

And the nice cool heat.

Here is the video from today.

Here are some pictures from today, check out the shoulder and the lack of traffic during different periods of the day.

Here is a rest stop at a not so busy post office.

Yes, the market was closed.

Check out the bad shoulder.  No room on my bike for anyone else.

Tom put the luggage on the end of my bed likes he does every afternoon.  Not a lot of room in those bags for 48 days.

So I have a laundry routine, but basically involves putting my dirty clothes into the bottom of the shower and taking a shower and stomping on my clothes and then I had a more shampoo and soap to them as well to get them good and clean. I’ve become the washing machine the human washing machine. Then I roam up in a towel to get the extra water out and hang around the room and I haven’t had any issues in the morning with having wet clothing.

Day 3 | 93 miles to Indio, CA | What I learned today

Another great day.  It started off cool this am, but warmed up quickly with a 3 mile climb about 2 miles into the ride, and then followed by another 6 mile climb about 10 miles later.  We are going to have a route rap tonight to discuss the desert, as we have 2 more big days going across and we need to take precautions, including using camel backs in addition to our water bottles.  Dinner is on our own tonight, as we are at a casino with a lot of different options.

Here is a map of where we have come from and today’s ride.

Here are some things that I have learned on the tour so far:

1. The guy in the picture at the top is Tom, and he is the logistics manager of the tour.  He is a guy you want to keep happy.  He puts your luggage on the foot of the bed in your hotel room every afternoon. He also loads the truck each morning, as we bring our luggage down to the front of the hotel each am.    But in my opinion, his most important role, is making sure the SAG stops are fully stocked with all of the goodies, and drinks.  Tom, like me likes the pastries in the am.  After about 30 miles, you roll up and Tom has the goodies.  We get along great :). The second picture is the luggage waiting to get loaded into the truck this am.

2. The hills are Loooooooong in CA, and I hear out west.  In middle TN, they are steep but usually end in a half mile to mile at the longest.  Not here, as I stated above we had a 3 and a 6 mile climb early on. THese are some of the hills that we had to climb.

 Check out the video below.

3. The Wind is your friend, ONLY when it is blowing in the same direction that you are going.  In the pictures, if you look closely, you will see many windmills, which again is good for biking sometimes.

Fortunately for me, when I took these pictures, the wind was BLOWING at my back.  I was going 28-30 MPH with barely pedaling. It as a great 7-8 miles, unfortunately we don’t go straight and we make turns, and the wind changes directions, and I paid for this great tailwind.  We went along I-10 and the traffic was going in the opposite direction, so some of that wind was probably from the cars/trucks, but still.

3. I saw not 1 Palm tree (except for these in the welcome to Palm Springs corner), or 1 Spring, when I was in Palm Springs.  I am sure there had to be some on the golf courses, but I didn’t see any, and we passed many.  It seems as if Palm Desert got it right in naming their city, which sits next to Palm Springs, it is a desert.

4. The Desert is hot.  I already knew this, but riding your bike in a desert makes it hotter. For those of you that will respond with nice comments about this one, I might add Heat is Heat, and it’s hot, don’t tell me about dry heat.

5. There is still snow on the tops of some of the mountains.  Look closely.

6. That you folks are wonderful!!  With my company match of your donations, we are at about $25,000 for The Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.  Thank you!

Day 2 | HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL | 79 miles

What a great day.  A little cool in the am, but it was great cycling weather.  We rode about 5 miles from the hotel to Manhattan Beach, and then did the wheel dip, and took some pictures.  The ride to the beach was nice, and there was a beach bike path for part of it.

Here are a couple of pics of us leaving the hotel and getting to the bike path, and then the pier.

The map below shows you the route we took today. ( the blue line)

Here are a couple of pictures of another bike path that we took, and a nice palm tree covered street that we were on for 10 miles.  The rest of it was urban traffic, although there were bike lanes, it was still busy, and it was Sunday....thank goodness. No pictures of that, you can imagine.

Route rap for tomorrow’s route is at 5:45, followed by group dinner.

I am here, and my BIKE is here!! (In L.A.)

So I arrived yesterday afternoon to LA, and on my flight, I had WiFi, so I was able to track my bike and it was delivered.  This was a great relief for those of you that don’t know, my bike was supposed to have left Nashville last Friday, and because of complications, didn’t leave until Monday afternoon.  What was supposed to be a no big deal shipment with a few extra days of cushion, turned out to be just on time, and the cushion was needed.

I built up my bike this morning myself while everyone else was waiting to be checked in or waiting on the mechanic.  Glad that I have some mechanical skills, and they might come in handy on the trip, hope not, but better to have them and not need them.

We will have a 3 hour meeting later this afternoon to go over the tour, routes, rules, housekeeping, and I am sure an introduction of everyone.  Will keep your posted.

Well that wasn’t so bad.  A few introductions, safety tips, route rap, housekeeping, and general info, and 2 1/2 hours later we are good to go.  Dinner will be at 6 in a conference room in the hotel, a nice group dinner.  Most will be at restaurants, but tonight they wanted us to meet everyone, and have a chance to talk to a lot of different people.

Tomorrow we are up at 5 am as they want us on the road to Manhattan Beach around 6:30 where we will take pictures and say good bye to our friends and family.  Tomorrow is only an 80 mile day, and looks to be nice weather.

I leave in 2 Days

I leave for LA on Friday afternoon, and it's Wednesday afternoon.  It's almost here, and I keep getting asked mainly one question, "So are you ready"?  I think so, I have done the training, and everything that I need to do, and have dropped some lbs. to make the ride easier, especially over the Rockies.

The only real issue, and it's not a big issue now, is the transportation of my bike.  It was supposed to go out on Friday (#1 on the above picture), but it wasn't picked up until Monday afternoon (#2 on the above picture).  That is really the only stress that I have, and the Fedex tracking says that it should arrive on Friday by end of day.  There is just no more room for error, as I need it on Friday to put it back together.

I won't bore you with all of the details, but this past weekend was a little stressful, waiting for the FedEx tracking to update, and once it didn't by Saturday afternoon, I called the bike shop and asked what was up.  They said they brought it to the local drop, although it's not an actual FedEx location,  FedEx does pick up from there daily.  The only problem was the pick up at 3:00 from that location, and my bike was not there by 3:00.  And by the time I called the bike shop on Saturday to ask about all of this, and then I called the postal location, the location was closed for the WEEKEND at noon on Saturday, and I was calling after noon.  Although I didn't know they were closed at the time, I just thought they were busy and not answering the phone, so I decided to go down there.  All I could do was look through the back door window and see my Big Bike Box sitting there on the floor waiting to go out.

So there was nothing I could do but wait until Monday, although I had to head to a conference on Sunday afternoon.  Thankfully Lynn when by there on Monday and spoke with them, and they assured her that it would be picked up that afternoon around 3:00, which it was.  And now it is in transit in New Mexico somewhere.

I will repack probably tonight and/or tomorrow to make sure I have everything and that it fits into my 2 small bags.  Stay tuned.

I hope that you will follow along with me on this journey, and if you can please make a donation to the Children's Hospital below.  100% of your funds go to the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
